{"id":3,"date":"2010-10-08T15:48:17","date_gmt":"2010-10-08T15:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seanism.com\/blog\/?p=3"},"modified":"2011-04-10T13:14:26","modified_gmt":"2011-04-10T20:14:26","slug":"connecting-to-a-windows-pptp-vpn-from-ubuntu-10-04","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seanism.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/connecting-to-a-windows-pptp-vpn-from-ubuntu-10-04\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecting to a Windows PPTP VPN from Ubuntu 10.04"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;d like to connect to a Windows PPTP VPN here is a howto to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>You need to have Ubuntu 10.04 if not you need to apt-get some packages that are not installed by default.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click &#8216;System&#8217; -&gt; &#8216;Preferences&#8217; -&gt; &#8216;Network Connections&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8216;VPN&#8217; tab<\/li>\n<li>Leave &#8216;Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)&#8217; selected<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Click Create&#8230;&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Type in a connection name and check the box below it if you&#8217;d like the connection to connect automatically<\/li>\n<li>For &#8216;Gateway&#8217; enter in the VPN hostname or IP IE vpn.contoso.com or x.x.x.x<\/li>\n<li>For the username type in DOMAINusername where DOMAIN is your Windows domain name and username is&#8230;. your username<\/li>\n<li>Type in your password and leave the &#8216;NT Domain:&#8217; box empty<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8216;Advanced&#8230;&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Use Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE) and leave &#8216;Security&#8217; on &#8216;All Available (Default)&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Allow BSD data compression&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Allow Deflate data compression&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Check &#8216;Use TCP header compression&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Leave &#8216;Allow stateful encryption&#8217; and &#8216;Send PPP echo packets&#8217; unchecked<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8216;OK&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now this will send all your network traffic over the VPN.  If you&#8217;d like to still be able to use your local connection you need to click the &#8216;IPv4 Settings&#8217; tab, click &#8216;Routes&#8230;&#8217; and check &#8216;Use this connection only for resources on its network&#8217;.  Enabling this can be a security risk so you should talk to your IT administrator first before enabling it.  That option is called split tunneling.<\/p>\n<p>Click &#8216;Apply&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Now to connect left click your network icon in the panel on the top right and hover over &#8216;VPN Connections&#8217; and left click the connection you just created.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not on a connection that allows me to do further testing but when I can I&#8217;ll update this with more information.<\/p>\n<p>For earlier versions of Ubuntu use the following KB article to help you install the necessary programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/VPN\">https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/VPN<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;d like to connect to a Windows PPTP VPN here is a howto to make it happen.
